LA SANTA MUERTE

on the night of october 31st, people come from all over mexico city and beyond to pay their respects at the altar of la santa muerte in the tough tepito neighborhood, giving her gifts and bathing her with tobacco and marijuana smoke

Bio

Kurt Hollander is originally from New York City, lived in Mexico City for over 25 years, and now lives in Cali, Colombia. He is a writer of non-fiction, screenplays, children's books and travel writing. His autobiography, Several Ways to Die in Mexico City, was published by Feral House in Fall 2012 and was published in Spanish in 2015 by Trilce. He has written for the London Guardian Weekly, The Believer, Guernica, Vice, The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Ecologist, Letras Libres and I-D magazine, among others. His photographs have been exhibited in museums, galleries and alternative spaces in the USA, Mexico and Colombia and have been published in Domus, Vice, The Guardian, Huffington Post and Los Angeles Times. He is the author of Sonora: The Magic Market (RM 2008) and El Super (RM 2006). He is the translator of Beauty Salon by Mario Bellatin (City Lights Publishers 2009) and Hectic Ethics by Francisco Hinojosa (City Lights Publishers 1999). He is also the director and screenwriter of the feature film Carambola (Mexico, 2005). He was the editor of Poliester (a contemporary art magazine of the Americas) and the Portable Lower East Side.
